Female in Focus is the annual exhibition by the British Journal of Photography that’s dedicated to celebrating the remarkable contributions of women in contemporary photography. This year The Bridge and Tunnel Gallery in Brooklyn showcased the fourth edition of the show, featuring an inspiring collection of photographs that capture diverse perspectives, stories, and emotions through the lens of woman-identifying artists.
“Female in Focus is a testament to the creativity, talent, and innovation that women bring to the world of photography” – he incredible work of female photographers. The organizers reveal that globally 70-80% of photography students are women, yet, women account for only 13-15% of professional photographers. The Female in Focus award was launched in 2019 in response to this staggering gender imbalance in photography.
“When women’s stories aren’t recognized, we don’t see the whole picture” – Awareness around gender inequality in the industry may be growing, but the numbers aren’t changing fast enough. The award is an excellent initiative that champions the work of world-class women photographers across the world.
Visitors of The Bridge and Tunnel Gallery are invited to appreciate and honor the achievements of these incredible photographers and network with photographers and artists alike.
The Female in Focus Award recognizes the work of woman-identifying photographers, and past years have included leading women from The New Yorker, Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA) and international galleries and publications. The winners have been featured in Vogue Italia, The Guardian, The Times and more, further contributing to the promotion of their work.
British Journal of Photography is published by 1854, a multi-award winning digital media company. 1854 Awards culminate in some of the most viewed exhibitions in global history. Spanning fine art and documentary — single images and bodies of work — they offer a host of unparalleled opportunities for both emerging and established photographers to be exhibited, published and recognized around the world.
British Journal of Photography is the world’s oldest and most influential photography title, home to some of the photography industry’s most prestigious awards. Their in-house agency connects the best photographic talent with major international brands to produce game-changing visual campaigns.
The forth edition of the exhibition is on view at New York City’s The Bridge and Tunnel Gallery. The gallery stands at the intersection of ideation, creation, and community building. Thinkers, makers, and artisans from historically underrepresented communities use the shared space to create and offer their work. Through their meticulous curation and production, The Bridge and Tunnel Gallery have become a playground for the senses—a place where creators, vendors, and patrons can gather and connect.
We encourage you to follow the brilliant works of female-identifying photographers and submit your photography to British Journal of Photography’s awards!
