Explore the Cosmic and the Abstract: Alexandros Tsolakis's ARITHMETICS at Willoughby Gerrish – 'Streams', unique drawing in code, 2022/24

Gerrish Fine Art proudly presents ARITHMETICS, a captivating exhibition of works by Alexandros Tsolakis, on view from August 22nd to 31st at Willoughby Gerrish in London. This exhibition marks a significant moment in Tsolakis's artistic journey, showcasing his first solo show as a visual artist in a commercial gallery, following his notable contributions to installation art and his work as a creative director.

ARITHMETICS invites visitors into a world where abstract forms and mathematical precision converge, creating a visual symphony that echoes the vastness of the universe.

The exhibition features intricate drawings and sculptures where millions of tiny dots come together to create breathtaking images. These dots, carefully arranged using mathematical formulas and a touch of creative chaos, form abstract landscapes, celestial scenes, and even musical compositions.

Each piece in the exhibition offers a glimpse into the artist's exploration of cosmic phenomena, where points become particles, rays of light, or swirling masses, all captured on Hahnemühle paper. It’s like seeing the universe come to life on paper.

A complex interplay between code, ink, and chaos.

Born in 1980, Alexandros Tsolakis has a background in architecture and computation, which shines through in his art. He started out as part of the United Visual Artists (UVA) collective, creating installations that have been featured at the Barbican, Fondation Cartier, and Durham Cathedral. Since 2018, he’s been working solo, exploring new ways to blend his skills in art, design, and technology.

The exhibition is divided into several thematic series, each offering a unique perspective on the artist's exploration of the abstract and the cosmic:

Streams of Everything: This series visualizes the enormity of the universe through streams of points that surge, ebb, and flow, metaphorically representing the interconnectedness of life and the forces that shape our existence.

Universal Tilt: Tsolakis's Op Art-inspired works explore the perception of time, motion, and space, drawing inspiration from the movement of stars and galaxies. These pieces create a sense of virtual motion, simulating the passage of time and the arc of celestial bodies.

Critical Mass: In this series, small dots swirl together, forming fluid, naturalistic patterns that suggest movement and circulation. The artist manipulates code to create a dance between light and dark, presence and absence.

Symphony: Rooted in the visual language of musical notation, this series references the graphic scores of avant-garde composers. The intricate arrangements of points evoke a visual soundscape, translating musical elements into abstract forms.

Each artwork in ARITHMETICS is a unique drawing created through code, printed as a giclée on Hahnemühle paper. Tsolakis’s work is a perfect blend of technical skill and creative imagination, making this exhibition a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of art and science.

Visit the exhibition through August 31st and let us know your thoughts!
