Pixelweaver is Daniel Canogar’s solo show at New York City’s Bitforms Gallery. The artist brings together traditional weaving techniques and algorithmic tools to represent the social fabric of our data-driven society. With generative tapestries and intertwined news captions, Pixelweaver creatively records current news and finance updates in digitalized versions of century old methods.
The collection presents digital textiles of weaved in real-time data from various news sources — and it’s incredibly unique.
The exhibition features artwork that draw real-time information from financial markets such as stock, cryptocurrency, and foreign exchange as well as headings from major international news channels, including CNN, Fox News, and Bloomberg.
The algorithmic artwork display the data in the form of a ticker tape, which is the earliest electrical financial communications medium used in 1870s through 1970. These paper ribbons were used to transmit stock price information over telegraph lines, and now they’re creatively integrated into today’s digital arts scene.
Daniel Canogar was born in Madrid to an American mother and Spanish father and currently works between Los Angeles and Madrid. He is an artist best known for his generative artwork installations, site-specific audiovisual projects, and projected video art.
Canogar’s work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries across the world, and his permanent public art installations are in view worldwide including California, Germany, and Spain.
Bitforms Gallery was founded in 2001 to support and advocate for the collection of ephemeral, time-based, and digital artworks. They represent artists that critically engage with new technologies and program exhibitions that present digital and new media art forms.
Bringing old technologies and traditions into our digital age, Pixelweaver is honoring the ever-evolving information systems and constant regeneration of humanity.
